Kyene Drum Ensemble is devoted to the study and performance of West
African and African Diaspora Musics (Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian). In the
Akan language of Ghana, Kyene means “any type of drum”—reflecting our
interest in all rhythm-based musics. Formed in 2004, the ensemble has
performed for festivals, concerts, and in public parks, for sponsors
including Kentucky Educational Television, Kentucky Reggae Festival,
Louisville Worldfest, Arts Council of Louisville, University of
Louisville, JB Speed Art Museum, Kentucky Theater Project, Ghana
Association of Louisville, Louisville Free Public Library, Jefferson
Community College, and Indiana University Southeast. Members of the
ensemble also present hands-on workshops in schools and community
centers throughout the region. We often collaborate with Moha Dosso,
fire and stilt dancer and musician from Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa.
